When Pageants Are Filmed for Television

by RhondaShappert May 18, 2012 06:48

We are a society who loves to watch the television. We watch to be entertained, inspired, educated and escape from the daily routine of our life. Maybe that’s why pageants and TV are a natural fit for each other.

With all the filming effects, camera angles, and editing, television can make events and people smaller or bigger than life. I totally understand contestants’ and parents’ apprehension when they first find out the pageant they are competing in is being filmed for television. After all, most of what the media focuses on is the isolated, over the top situation. It’s not representational of the pageant world as a whole.

There are a few keys points to keep in mind when the TV crew is around. They are going to follow and focus on events and contestants who will draw people into watching the show. The network doesn’t care about who wins the pageant. Their focus is to give their demographic audience a show worth watching.

If it’s drama they want, they will seek out the “drama queen.” If it is to inspire, they will find the person with the most compelling story. The television network has their focus, and the pageant system has theirs. The two are separate worlds.

So don’t think because the cameras, or the media, are following one contestant that she is the choice of the judges and going to win the pageant. Do not let the presence of the camera crew play with your head. Most of the time, the winner is completely off the media’s radar screen.

Always be yourself. If you start thinking you have to act a certain way or say certain things, you’re flirting with disaster. Stay focused on who you are, your message and show them the class act lady you are. It’s what you say and do when no one is watching that reveals your true character.

Hopefully, the camera will be filming at that moment, and finally the world can see the truth about what draws people to the pageant stage. It’s achievement, friendship, self expression, service to others, personal growth, and opportunity all wrapped up and topped with a pretty crown. The crown is just the bow to the meaningful gift wrapped underneath.

Be the change you want to see happen in the way pageants are portrayed on television. It starts one contestant at a time.

What kind of questions will the judges ask me in interview?
What if I don't have an answer?

The ability to answer questions about you, your family, platform, goals, community and pop culture in a clear way is an important life skill. The more practice you have in conversing with people, the better your speaking skills will become.

Over 1000 contestants from ages 7 to 80 around the world have used these cards and reported back to me that they were confident and prepared for their pageant interview. Many of my clients receive the highest interview scores.

As a contestant and judge, these are real questions that I have asked, been asked, or heard other judges ask in the interview room. I know they are effective and relevant because my clients and pageant family on Facebook have told me several times that they have experienced other pageant coaches and judges using my cards. By the way, I take this as a compliment, not a threat :).
Outstanding features of this 12 card set includes:</ p>

Pageant Lingo, Terms and Slang Defined

by RhondaShappert May 2, 2012 20:27

Every industry has certain lingo, terms and slang. The pageant world is no different. Below you will find some of the most common used pageant words and what they mean.

Pageant System-Each pageant is a privately owned business. Each “system” has its own set of rules, areas of competition, scoring system, focus, and look.

Director-The private business owner of a pageant. The director makes all the decisions surrounding the pageant.

Aging-Up and Aging-out: There are different age divisions within pageants. Aging-up refers to when you move up to the next age bracket, whereas aging out means you are too old for a division. For example, if a girl turns 10, she has “aged-out” of the 7-9 year old division and “aged-up” into the 10-12 year old division. At age 10, she is at the “bottom” of her age group where the 12 year old would be “at the top.” There is no standardized age categories in pageantry so check with the director for the cut off dates to determine which age group you or your child will be competing in.

Glitz-Refers to a type of pageant style. Generally speaking, dresses are highly stoned cupcake dresses, big hair, lots of makeup, spray tanning, enhancements, and Pro Am routines are used.

Cupcake dress- Short dress that is several inches above the knee with multiple layers of tulle, stones, and are generally custom-made. This is the standard dress in a glitz pageant.

Stoned- Clothing decorated with AB (AB stands for Aurora Borealis that shines with many colors) and clear rhinestones.

Pro Am- Elaborate modeling routines where turns and tricks, exaggerated head and hand gestures, and props are used.

Natural- Refers to a type of pageant style. G enerally speaking, the dress is more conservative but still glamorous. Hair and makeup are to enhance the natural beauty, not to become the focus point.

Flippers- Fake teeth. Flippers are an oral retainer that fits over the natural teeth to fill in missing teeth and enhance the appearance of a person’s teeth. These are used in glitz pageants.

Butt glue-Slang for roll-on or aerosol adhesive used to keep the swimsuit in place on your bottom.

H/M- Hair and Makeup Stylist

“OTR” or Off the Rack- Means an outfit bought at the store and has not been embellished.

Custom made or Customized
- Handmade to fit the contestant. Usually OOAK.

“OOAK”- One of a kind, term used when referring to pageant wardrobe.

Titleholder- A contestant winning a crown and sash. In some pageant systems there are multiple titles, or queens, crowned within the same age division.

Court- The runners up.

Judge’s bio- This is a contestant’s resume that the judges receive. It is sometimes called a contestant application, fact sheet, or resume.

Optionals- Additional areas of competition judged by a separate panel of judges and have NO influence on the selection of the overall title.

Casual Wear -It is not blue jeans and a graphic t-shirt. It is a before 5pm outfit that is fashionable, fun, and trendy. It can either be OTR or custom-made.

At-Large Contestant- A contestant who did not compete at a preliminary competition but can compete for the state or national title.

Appointed Queen- The director selects a contestant to represent the state at the national pageant when a state pageant wasn’t held.

Cutlets-Silicone pads that look and feel like raw chicken breasts that contestants put in their swimsuit tops and bras to go up a cup size or two.

Prelim- Short word for Preliminary Pageant. Prelims are smaller local pageants that feed into a larger state competition. The queen is required to compete at the state pageant. State winners are required to compete at the national pageant.

Platform- Is a service project or non-profit organization that a contestant is heavily involved.

The Power of a Picture

by RhondaShappert April 16, 2012 23:54

This picture was taken last year of me with my three daughters by Rick Martinez. It’s one of my favorites.

Today he took new headshots of us which got me to thinking about the power of pictures. Never underestimate the power of your headshot.

Your pageant headshot immediately speaks to the person looking at it. The expression in your eyes, the position of your body, and the clothing you wear gives clues into your personality and values. Here are 5 quick tips from Rick for you to keep in mind for your photo shoot.

  • Bring 4-5 tops and dresses which have interesting necklines and collars. Straps do not photograph well.
  • Bring lots of accessories. Big beautiful earrings draw attention to your face.
  • Matte eye shadows photograph best.
  • Make sure your fingernails are clean and neat.
  • For teens and women, a set of false eyelashes really make your eyes pop in the photo.

One more thought regarding your personal image and photos. In today’s society, it is so easy to post photos on the internet. Once a person hits “send”, it’s out there forever. One careless image could have lasting repercussions in your life. Always be aware of what’s around you in your photos.

For example, you may not drink alcohol. However, if you are standing in a group photo and other people in the picture are holding beer bottles and acting obnoxious, by association, people are going to think you’re the same way.
A photo is worth a thousand words. Just make sure they are the words you endorse and can live by.

The WTP Interview Card Set

  • Over 200 questions covering 12 diverse subjects. Each card has questions dedicated to one topic. For example, there are 56 questions on the "favorites" card.
  • The back side is blank so you can jot down your ideas for answers.
  • Being the size of a recipe card, they are easy to carry and you can practice anywhere.
The DVD will arrive separately from the planner and the interview cards. With the holiday mail delivery, please allow up to 14 days for delivery.

Tell me about your pageant background and experience?

I have been a heavily involved member of the pageant community for over 22 years now. My daughter competed in her first natural pageant at 18 months. We have been hooked since our very first pageant! Over the years, I have gained experience as a judge, director, and my favorite experience was being a “Pageant Mom” and making my own set of pageant friends!

What made you decide to start your own pageant system?

I love everything pageantry stands for, and truly believe it can change young women and girls’ lives. I am reminded of this every day I see my daughter, and remember what a shy little girl she was growing up. Now, she is outspoken, and a leader in her community. Of course, I would like to take all the credit ? - but I do know a lot of that is a result of what she learned through pageants. I have wanted to start my own system for over five years now. With my youngest son preparing to graduate from high school, I now have the proper time to dedicate to American Royal Beauties. I wanted to make sure my system, its queens, and my contestants got as much time, detail and attention put into them as possible, so everyone involved will leave with a great experience after pageant weekend.

What qualities are you looking for in your queens?

An American Royal Beauties Queen needs be a positive young woman who will excel in academics, be active in their communities through service events, and an excellent future leader of tomorrow. She will carry herself with grace, have positive morals, and overall, be a glamorous girl that others can look to as a role model. Our Queens, throughout their reign will promote our Motto “Pass It On,” which asks our ladies to do a good deed, in turn, inspiring others around them to also do a good deed for another, and continuing to, “Pass it on”. Our Queens will be asked to do at least six parades or community service projects together, and they will be asked to promote American Royal Beauties as much as they can. We do not have “no compete” restriction, so our queens may also compete and hold titles with other pageant systems.

What is your long term vision for your pageant system?

I hope that girls will enjoy my system, and long term, hope to witness my efforts unfold into a national pageant.

What sets your pageant apart from the other pageants out there?

We are looking to build not only individual skills for these girls to use the rest of their lives, but also are looking to create lasting friendships! We hope that by focusing a little more on community involvement, we can get youth interested in giving back to the communities or organizations that mean something to them. We also hope to bring class and glamour back into style. American Royal Beauties want our girls to feel as beautiful on the inside as they all are on the outside.

Is your first pageant just for Ohio residents, or can contestants from other states compete?

Our first pageant will be for Ohio residents only. Contestants who live out of state, but have proof on an Ohio residence may also compete.

What do you want people to know about you or the pageant system?

We are working hard to make sure the American Royal Beauties Pageant will be a fun and exciting experience for all of our girls! We are offering more optional competitions, as well as keeping the entry fee and other costs as low as possible! Pageant weekend will take place at the beautiful Embassy Suites Hotel in Dublin, Ohio, that has suites for everyone discounted. Everyone staying at the hotel will get a full service breakfast every morning, and cocktails and hors d'oeuvres every evening. I am allowing everyone to make payments up until three weeks before pageant weekend. Our official American Royal Beauties’ crowns are very distinct, and our sashes are stylish silver, accented with hot pink trim.

Vendors will be present in the atrium during pageant weekend also. All of the vendors will be affiliated with pageantry. Our first pageant will be held in 2013! Giving our contestants plenty of time to prepare, get involved in the communities, gather potential sponsors to compete, and will also allow us more time to come up with even more exciting events to hold during or around pageant weekend! We hope to see you on our stage May 3-5, 2013!

Community Service: Savor the Joy of Giving

by RhondaShappert December 6, 2011 18:22

Today, December 6th, is the Feast of St. Nicholas. He had a reputation for secret gift-giving, such as putting coins in the shoes of those who left them out for him, and thus became the model for Santa Claus.

The obvious recipients of our gift giving efforts this month are our children, family and friends. But why stop there?

As a family, go serve a meal at a soup kitchen. If your children have never been to a nursing home, make some homemade cards and cookies and go visit the elderly who wait for people to come visit them. Better yet, if your family is musically inclined work up some Christmas carols and sing for them. There are veterans in hospitals who would love nothing more than to see a friendly warm smile enter the room.

Here’s a radical suggestion. Instead of multiple gifts under the tree for each family member, buy one gift for each person (or set a price limit) and use the money you would have spent to buy food and gifts for people who have very little this season. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said “Self-sacrifice is the real miracle out of which all the reported miracles grow.”

If you are a titleholder, there are numerous opportunities for you to give of your time and talents to reach out to people in your community. When the public sees queens being of service, those actions are what begin to break down the myths of pageant girls being superficial. Crown or no crown. Get involved and be the “secret Santa” in your community. By the way, the word Santa comes from the Latin word Sanctus which means saintly or holy.

Happy Feast of St. Nicholas Day. Embrace the joy of giving and I leave you with a sweet little poem.

Santa's Christmas Prayer
By Warren D. Jennings

The sleigh was packed,
the reindeer were fed,
But Santa still knelt
by the side of the bed.

"Dear Father," he prayed
"Be with me tonight.
There's much work to do
and my schedule is tight.

I must jump in my sleigh
and streak through the sky,
Knowing full well
that a reindeer can't fly.

I will visit each household
before the first light,
I'll cover the world
and all in one night.

With sleigh bells a-ringing,
I'll land on each roof,
Amid the soft clatter
of each little hoof.

To get in the house
is the difficult part,
So I'll slide down the chimney
of each little heart.

My sack will hold toys
to grant all their wishes.
The supply will be endless
like the loaves and the fishes.

I will fill all the stockings
and not leave a track.
I'll eat every cookie
that's left for my snack.

I can do all these things Lord,
only through You,
I just need your blessing,
then it's easy to do.

All this is to honor
the birth of the One,
That was sent to redeem us,
Your most Holy Son.

So to all of my friends,
lest Your glory I rob,
Please Lord, remind them,
who gave me this job."

5 Helpful Tips For A National Pageants

by RhondaShappert December 2, 2011 19:28

Your expectations lay the groundwork for how positive your national pageant experience will be. Today I share 5 tips that will help you at your national pageant.

  • Get plenty of rest before you leave for the pageant. The schedule is packed and you will get very little sleep at the pageant. Any FUN events should be done either before or after the actual competition. Once the competition schedule begins, it’s WORK time. If the whole family goes, get them their own room or have something for them to do off site so you can get ready in your own space. Pageants are VERY stressful. When there are too many people under foot, drama will happen.

  • The most positive and ideal situation is to have only ONE of your children compete at a time. All three of my daughters competed at the MAC national pageant last week and I will never do all three at the same time again. It’s too overwhelming and not enjoyable. I’ve now done all combinations at all levels of competition and I can firmly say that one at a time is the best way to go.

  • You will need support a team. Surround yourself with people who work well under pressure, keep you in a positive state of mind, and who are punctual, detail oriented and organized. Know your weaknesses and enlist the help of those who have the strengths you need to keep things moving in the right direction. Avoid situations and people who push your buttons. The more self reliant you are, the better; but you can’t do everything alone.

  • Expect the unexpected. Expect to be surprised by people’s behavior and who shows up at the national competition. If you know ahead of time that someone or something will catch you off guard, you’ll be expecting it.

  • Expect to feel every human emotion possible during pageant week. The key is not to let the feelings define who you are or paralyze you. If an emotion is taking you to a negative place, you need to have a plan as to how you can flip the situation quickly. This might mean physically leaving the situation or mentally escaping to your “happy” place.

To all of you who have worked with me one-on-one, attended my boot camps, received my interview cards and used the abundant information I freely give in my newsletters, I congratulate each and every one of you on your accomplishments this past week at the national MAC and NAM pageants.

My focus has and always will be on the positive growth process leading up to the pageant. What you have learned in that process is applied not only to the pageant; but in your life after the crowning moment.

It takes a whole team of people to help you succeed; but at the end of the pageant, it is YOU who has won the honor—not your stylist nor one of your many coaches. YOU.

But remember to give proper credit where credit is due, be humble in your attitude, and be respectful in your words and actions. Forget no one who has helped you along the way.

“The more credit you give away, the more will come back to you. The more you help others, the more they will want to help you.” Brian Tracy

New Beginnings From Endings

by RhondaShappert May 24, 2011 18:58

Meet Kitty, my mom’s 28lb cat. Yes, 28 pounds! He’s been a great source of comfort and entertainment to my mom and dad for the past 17 months while my dad fought lung cancer. Kitty will continue to be a great companion to my mom since my dad has gone home to his eternal rest. Please continue to keep our family in your prayers.

We just got home from the 22 hour drive from South Dakota where I was without cell phone reception and internet access for the week I was on the farm. I can’t tell you how overwhelmed I was when I logged onto my home computer and read all the messages of love and support. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. I am truly touched and humbled by your concern.

Today’s brief newsletter is my reflection on the new beginnings that come from perceived endings. There are times in our lives when endings feel like the end of the world. The death of loved ones, not winning something you’ve prepared for, or relationships ending that you thought would last forever are just a few examples of events that may leave you feeling empty, angry or numb. It’s natural to want to blame other people, circumstances and things for the pain you may experience. But for you to have new beginnings that lead to greater, fuller opportunities some things must end even if it is painful at first.

Being raised on a farm, I saw evidence of this time and time again as we grew a vegetable garden and cleared out the trees around our home. Whenever we pruned the dead or scraggly parts of the plant, the rest of the plant grew bigger, healthier and produce more fruit than those we didn’t prune. In all things, there are times when we need to let go to become the fully productive person that God intended us to be.

The two blessings I received from my dad’s cancer was, first, a greater appreciation of time. Once I got over the shocking news that my dad had stage 4 cancer and had 6 months to live, I thought why do people wait until the funeral to say wonderful thoughts and feelings about their loved one. If the feelings are so important and genuine, why not say it to them while they are still alive.

So back in March, I wrote my dad a very lengthy letter filled with all the things I wanted him to know and I mailed it to him. In following conversations, he frequently told me how much he appreciated that letter, how he read it multiple times and how it helped him to have closure with certain things in his life.

By writing that letter, it allowed past hurts and misinterpretations between us to end. The result was the times we had together from that point on were of a higher quality than before.

The second blessing was that my mom and all four of us kids made it home in time and were beside my dad when he took his last breath. It was a peaceful and beautiful ending to his human life. He turned 70 on May 16th and went home to Heaven on May 17th at 12:55am.

Endings can be painful, but know that within them lie the seeds of new life.

Blessings,

1

What Got You Here Won’t Get You There

by RhondaShappert April 27, 2011 05:00

“That’s it!” When I saw the title of this book, I had one of those “aha” moments. The answer to why some contestants never move beyond a certain level in pageantry is found in those eight simple words- what got you here, won’t get you there. Not only do I see it in so many contestants’ pageant lives; but at one time, it was present in my life as well.

You see, prior to getting married and having children, I had won every pageant I had competed in. So when I decided to compete in the Mrs. Ohio America pageant for the first time, I thought, “No problem. I’ve done this so many times before. I know what to do and in a couple months, I’ll be on the beaches of Hawaii competing for Mrs. America.”

Flash forward to the Mrs. Ohio pageant. After the tenth name was called, all feeling left my body. Completely numb, I remembered thinking to myself, “They missed my name. I didn’t hear my name. This can’t be happening. There must be a mistake.” I was devastated. My three little girls were screaming “go mommy”, my family had traveled 1000 miles to watch me, my friends were in the audience and I didn’t even make the first cut.

Some people would have given up after that, but it dawned on me: If I really wanted to win the title of Mrs. Ohio, then my current knowledge base and four previous titles were not going to be enough. To make the next vertical jump, I was going to have to make some changes.

Change is never easy. It involves time, money and ego. But when I humbled myself and became teachable to reputable people who really cared about my success, things started to happen. I didn’t change who I was as a person. Instead, I polished my outer appearance and communicated to the judges what made me unique.

With the exception of the national Mrs. America pageant, for the next 5 years, I always placed in the top 5 in every pageant I competed in. Each time I competed, I would make a change here and there until finally the formula was complete and I was crowned Mrs. Ohio America. The key is I enjoyed the entire process. I loved challenging myself and learning new things.

Perhaps you’re stuck at a particular level of competition right now. Maybe you’ve won local titles but haven’t won a state title. Or you win state titles, but that national title just dangles like a carrot in front of you. Maybe you just want to hear your name called for any title.

If that’s where you are, realize if you really want to move forward, it will involve making some changes. That might mean you’ll need to invest more time into your pageant preparation, or maybe a larger monetary investment into your wardrobe and training, or more importantly a shift in your attitude.

Wherever you are in your pageant journey, I would love to be a part of your team. Remember to enjoy the process and have fun with the people who surround you.

How Big Is Your But?

by RhondaShappert January 5, 2011 06:04

With the holidays behind you, it’s time to shift your focus to the year 2011. In last week’s newsletter, I stressed the importance of planning if you want your results in 2011 to be different than 2010; but a plan without action is worthless.

Every January 1st, people set all kinds of resolutions with good intentions. Then, by the middle of February, most of those resolutions are distant memories. Yes, there’s power in setting a goal-tremendous power in writing it down. It’s the first step to making change happen. However, what is it that gets in your way of making those intentions happen? I’ll tell you what it is.It’s your enormous BUT.

  • I would do it now BUT I don’t have the time.

  • I would do it BUT I don’t have the money.

  • I would do it BUT I don’t know how.

  • I would do it BUT I’m not good enough.

  • I would do it BUT it’s too late.

BUT is a mental block that will keep your physical butt from taking action to make your dreams come true. So time of truth, HOW BIG IS YOUR BUT? How much longer are you going to allow your mental blocks hold you back from the dreams and desires of your heart?

You want a stronger spiritual life? Then spend more time in daily prayer. You want to be of greater service to those around you? Then start looking at ways that you can offer your gifts of time, talent or money to make a difference in your community. Don’t use your BUT (or sit on your butt) for another year thinking things are going to happen on their own. Start small if need be. Just start.

What is it that will move you to take action? For most people, they need someone or something to hold them accountable. Personally, if I tell someone I am going to do something, I will take the necessary action to do it. BUT, if I keep it all to myself, it’s much easier NOT to take the action because no one else knows about it - except me. Or, if I pay for an event before it takes place, the chances of me attending are greater than if I wait until the last minute and pay at the door.

What action can you take to help hold you accountable to your new year’s resolutions? If you’re planning on participating in a pageant this year and want a winning experience by :

  • Feeling confidently relaxed at the pageant because of your thorough preparation.

  • Presenting your very best self to the judges.

  • Experiencing less pageant drama than you have in the past.

  • Answering interview questions with ease in a natural conversational style.

  • Developing a specific skill set that will help you succeed in life beyond the pageant.

Then check out my AIM mini-course which will be taking place the last two weeks of January. This is a teleclass and web based mini-course so it doesn’t matter where in the U.S. you live, you can take part in it. I’m only offering it once at this affordable price because I don’t want you to hide behind your BUT when it comes to your pageant preparation. Click on the following link for more details. The registration deadline is January 15th so don’t wait.

LIVE NOW

by RhondaShappert December 31, 2010 17:45

Let go of the need for things to be a particular way, and enjoy life just as it is. Let go of the assumption that you must always have something more, and find true enjoyment in all that is already in your life.

Dream big, meaningful dreams and make detailed, effective plans for bringing those dreams about. Live forward toward those dreams, but don't ever postpone your enjoyment of life.

You are worthy of the very best that is in this moment, so fully accept it and experience it. This moment is worthy of the best that's within you, so generously give of yourself.

Live the value that is your life right now. Even in the most ordinary moments, life is as rich and fulfilling as you choose to make it.

If you're always waiting for later, or for things to get better, you'll miss out on the very opportunities that will lift you ever higher. Instead, have confidence in the value of where you now are and what you now have.

Live now, and live as if you are the richest person who has ever lived. Because when you do, you are.
