Rhonda Shappert - The Pageant Expert & Personal Development Coach™

An Interview with Miss Ohio 2011- Ellen Bryan

by RhondaShappert February 21, 2012 21:39

At the suggestion of one of her college professors, Ellen Bryan competed in her first pageant when she was a sophomore in college. He thought the Miss America system would be good experience for the telecommunications major. With her eyes set on the goal of becoming a news anchor, this future TV broadcaster began her three year journey to the Miss America stage.

In preparation for the 2008 Miss Lake Festival preliminary, she selected “When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors- Promoting Lightning Awareness” as her personal platform. Twelve years ago, Ellen’s sister Christina was struck by lightning while working at a golf course leaving Christina without the ability to speak or move. To this day Christina remains in a wheelchair.

Through her partnership with NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) and the National Weather Service, Ellen has spoken to over 3000 students, 100 businesses and service organizations, and has traveled to Washington D.C., Chicago, Maryland, Florida, Tennessee, Ohio and Indiana to promote lightning safety. Last year, Ellen created the Lightning Safety and Awareness Fund at the Mercer County Civic Foundation. To date, she has raised nearly $5000 for this fund.

In recognition of the depth and significant impact she has had with her platform and community service, Ellen was one of eight Miss America Quality of Life award finalists at the 2012 Miss America pageant. She also received the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Medal Award. Ellen’s scholarship earnings from the Miss America Organization total more than $25,000.

With Ellen being 4th Runner Up her first year, 3rd Runner Up her second year , and winning the title her third year competing on the Miss Ohio stage, I asked if she could share how her focus had evolved over the past 3 years.

The first year, she focused on developing her platform. With her confidence level growing, Ellen began working with a personal trainer for her second year of competition. In addition, she bumped up her wardrobe and went even deeper into her platform. The third year was when she really focused on her talent and prepared for “the job” of Miss Ohio. Ellen said that when she stopped worrying about what other people thought and created a detailed action plan of what she would do as Miss Ohio, a deep sense of confidence and belief came over her.

“My journey to Miss Ohio was more like a ‘soul searching’ adventure. When I figured out who I was, what I wanted, and what was important in my life, I knew I was ready for the job; and I feel that came across to the judges.”

When I asked her what the hardest part about preparing for the Miss America pageant was, she told me it was balancing her appearance schedule at Miss Ohio with the preparation for Miss America. After her crowning, she successfully juggled making 3-4 appearances a week, working out with her personal trainer twice a week, and studying with her vocal teacher every other week. Since Miss America, Ellen has had an appearance almost daily and put 23,000 miles on her car as Miss Ohio. That’s a lot of appearances.

I asked her to relate a couple of highlights from her year. Without hesitation she cited two of her favorites: the 10 days at Miss America and her Ohio bike tour this summer where she pedaled 850 miles to 45 cities across the state in 27 days. Raising over $2000 for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, she rode to every CMNH in Ohio and made appearances along the way. Ellen says every women she met at nationals, the people she meets at her appearances, and the celebrities she has encountered have all been incredible.

She has three more months as Miss Ohio and has no plans of slowing down. Ellen is a wonderful example of “paying it forward” and “walking the talk.” Congratulations Ellen on all you have accomplished thus far and I know we will be seeing you on the television soon.

Say Goodbye to Your Beauty Products

by RhondaShappert February 16, 2012 04:19

Emeraude Coty. That was my mom’s favorite perfume. With four children buying it for her every Mother’s Day, birthday and Christmas, there came a time when she told us, “kids I have enough.” LOL. At one point I remember she had 5 unopened bottles of it on her dresser. I had forgotten about it until last May when we were in mom’s bedroom getting clothes for my dad’s funeral. I looked on her dresser to see one bottle of Emeraude Coty with about a half inch of perfume left in the bottle. I asked her if she had bought that bottle and she said, “No, that’s what’s left from what you kids bought for me.” Whoa! I’m pretty sure that after 30 plus years that bottle of perfume really needed to be thrown out. But it wasn’t empty yet (wink and a smile).

On a recent cleaning spree, I found numerous beauty products in my bathroom that I had no idea of how old they were or if it was safe to still use them. So I started doing my own online research.

I found http://checkcosmetic.net/ very helpful and was able to find the expiration date for many of my “mysterious” products. Most of the products I “carbon dated” ended up in the trash. I found some really interesting information that I want to share it with you.

There’s no federal requirement for manufactures to put expiration dates on makeup or beauty products. But the products don’t last forever. As a general guideline, there is a two to three year shelf life for these products to allow for the manufacturing, distribution, and marketing.

Once the product is opened and exposed to air, your body and other surfaces, bacteria begins to grow. This leads to the product’s break down and possible skin irritation, allergic reaction and infection if used beyond its expiration date. For your health and to get the most from your beauty products, here are some tips I found in my research.

Here are the PAO (Period After Opening) recommendations for replacing your products:

Every three months: Replace your mascara and liquid liner
Every six months: Replace your skin-care regimen, sunscreens, and liquid foundation
Every year: Replace your hair products (except hair spray)
Every two years: Replace your powder-based cosmetics (such as pressed powder and shadows), lipsticks, perfume, body lotions, and nail polishes

  • Natural products have a shorter shelf life because there are no preservatives in them. Use 6 months as a guideline for replacement.
  • Creams, gels and liquids will expire before powders.

  • Sharpen eye and lip pencils at least once a week to prevent bacteria from building up. Regularly sanitize your sharpens with rubbing alcohol.
  • Clean your brushes at least once a month. Once a week is better. I use The Brush Guard product to dry my brushes.
  • Exposing your cosmetics to extreme temperate changes, high humidity levels, and direct sunlight will shorten the life span of your products and accelerate the growth of harmful bacteria.
  • Wash your hands before using your products.
  • Toss out eye products after you have had an eye infection.
  • Never share your products with anyone else.
  • Purchasing products in jars should be avoided. The product is exposed to more air and using your fingers to scoop product out will introduce germs and bacteria to the contents of the jar even if you wash your hands. If you have products in jars, use a small cosmetic spatula or disposable applicator to scoop out the product. Don’t use your fingers.

  • Use samples or buy the smallest size available when trying a product for the first time.
  • Use it or lose it. Don’t save your beauty products for special occasions only. If they make you feel pretty, wear them all the time.
  • If there is a change in the smell, texture, color or consistency of the product, throw it out immediately.
  • Never add water or saliva to thin out or revive a product.
  • Don’t “pump” your mascara wand to get more product. You’re adding additional air to the bottle which will cause it to dry out and grow more bacteria.
  • Never buy merchandise with broken seals or damaged containers.

If you’re experiencing itchy, irritated eyes or skin, there’s a possibility that one of your care products has expired. If in doubt, throw it out.

An Original is Always More Valuable Than a Copy

by RhondaShappert February 11, 2012 00:12

As tempting as it may be to copy someone, an original is always more valuable than a copy.

It’s important for you to watch what the top five contestants are doing at a pageant to see what styles and trends the system is following; but don’t be a copycat.

To truly stand out, you want to let the “real” you come through in everything you do. How you style your hair, what you wear, how you walk, and how you talk all make a statement about your originality.

Often, I will find there is one contestant going to the extreme in some area of her outer presentation to stand out. Perhaps it’s a risky gown choice, or an unconventional style of wearing her hair or makeup. If it is within her personality, that’s fine. But all too often, it’s very clear that she is just trying to separate herself from the others and she falls short.

Here is a copy of the priceless painting of the Mona Lisa. When you look at this copy, you may be thinking, “What is the big deal with this painting? I don’t even think she’s that pretty.” But I’ve seen the original at the Louvre museum in Paris. When you look at this painting in person, the eyes appear to follow you wherever you walk in the room. It’s very intriguing and magnetic. It’s funny because trying to hide from her gaze people will bump into each other moving around while they are staring at the painting.

You are the same. There are qualities about you that no one can copy or duplicate. Acknowledge and accept them as your gifts. Once you appreciate your value, you’ll immediately understand why you’re priceless in this world. That is how you will begin to stand out from the other contestants.

Paperwork Review Session

If you want a different set of eyes to look over your paperwork, I’ve created a Paperwork Review Session. Consider this a “second opinion” session. It is not a detailed development session. On the first call, I will share with you my first impressions about your paperwork; conduct a 5-minute mock interview based on the paperwork you have provided to me; tips on how to improve your paperwork; and a second mini-call after you have made corrections from our first call.

This will be a great investment to strengthening your first impression and to building a solid foundation for your interview. To get the most from our time together, have the exact forms your pageant system uses filled out to the best you can. Then, click here to purchase your session. Festival Pageants: A Great Place to Start

by RhondaShappert February 7, 2012 21:40

Festival Pageants

For your first pageant, start small. Pageantry is no different than sports. A high school coach would never consider putting one of his players in the Super Bowl game for their first time on the field. Same thing goes for pageantry. Before you start investing in all the equipment for this hobby sport, you need to find out if you like the environment.

For beginners, look for pageants that are free or have a small entry fee such as festival pageants. My mom borrowed everything I wore in my first festival pageant from my older cousin. It didn’t cost us a penny.

Smaller festival pageants usually last a few hours because they are just one of the many events included in the community celebration. Up dos and prom style hair is what you will see at festivals along with ball gown. There’s no overnight hotel expense or event tickets you need to purchase. For most festival pageants, you’ll arrive at the festival wearing your gown. When you check in, you’ll receive your contestant number.

If interview is part of the pageant, you will have it shortly after all the contestants have arrived. After interview, they will have the contestants introduce themselves onstage (usually on an outdoor stage so everyone at the festival can watch), do a short little modeling walk and possibly answer one more question in front of the crowd. Then the queen and her court are crowned. End of the event.

The one thing you will want to check out is how many parades the festival queen and her court are required to ride in for the year. In festivals, the entire court makes appearances, not just the queen. Festivals take place on weekends. If your family has many activities on the weekend, a better option would be to find a small pageant that doesn’t require any appearances after the crowning moment.

To find festival pageants, search the internet using the words “festivals in (insert your state)” For example, here in Ohio we have the Ohio Festivals and Events Association. When you go to this website, it has all the information listed for about fifty plus festivals around Ohio. The Department of Tourism for your state would also be a good place to find listing of the festivals. The best way to find out about smaller pageants is to go to a larger pageant and ask the contestants and their families what other pageants they can recommend.

The WTP Interview Card Set

What kind of questions will the judges ask me in interview?
What if I don't have an answer?

The ability to answer questions about you, your family, platform, goals, community and pop culture in a clear way is an important life skill. The more practice you have in conversing with people, the better your speaking skills will become.
Over 1000 contestants from ages 7 to 80 around the world have used these cards and reported back to me that they were confident and prepared for their pageant interview. Many of my clients receive the highest interview scores.
As a contestant and judge, these are real questions that I have asked, been asked, or heard other judges ask in the interview room. I know they are effective and relevant because my clients and pageant family on Facebook have told me several times that they have experienced other pageant coaches and judges using my cards. By the way, I take this as a compliment, not a threat :).
Outstanding features of this 12 card set includes:

  • Over 200 questions covering 12 diverse subjects. Each card has questions dedicated to one topic. For example, there are 56 questions on the "favorites" card.
  • The back side is blank so you can jot down your ideas for answers.
  • Being the size of a recipe card, they are easy to carry and you can practice anywhere.
The DVD will arrive separately from the planner and the interview cards. With the holiday mail delivery, please allow up to 14 days for delivery.

Please Don’t Make This Costly Pageant Mistake

by RhondaShappert February 1, 2012 02:52

Please don’t make this costly pageant mistake. If you are competing in a pageant where you have to submit paperwork for the judges to see, have two other people and finally your coach look it over a couple of weeks before your forms need to be turned into the director. All too often I find what a contestant meant to say and what comes across on the paper are conflicting. Once the pageant paperwork is turned in, it’s too late to change things.

My heart sinks when people send me their paperwork to review and when I see items that need to be changed, THEN they tell me “but I’ve already turned it in.” At this point, you’ve gone from playing offense, where you score points, to defense.
Misspelled words, punctuation errors and improper grammar are just the tip of the iceberg of the mistakes I see on contestants’ fact sheets. Formatting, word choice, and tone on your paperwork will make or break you in the interview room.

Your photo and paperwork create your first impression. Your second time to capture the judges’ attention is when they see you face-to-face. If the contestant they see in person is inconsistent with the woman on paper (or in her headshot), you’ve just created doubt in the judges’ minds. That’s not what you want. You want the judges to be looking for you, and eager to meet you.

The quality of the information on your judge’s sheet will determine the type and quality of the questions you are asked during your interview. Think of your contestant fact sheet as bait. You want to lure the judges in to ask the specific questions you need so you can catch their hearts and votes with your answers.

It takes hours and more than one draft to create a judge’s bio that will get the highest scores in the pageant. Haste makes waste. If you wait until the last minute to start on your paperwork, I guarantee you will not create the proper first impression you want or do your best.

Start a month before it is due. Work a little bit on your paperwork each day. Then when you have it to the point where you think it is perfect, have an English teacher proof read it. Once she is finished with it, have another professional adult look it over. Finally, have your pageant coach read it before you submit it to your director. By taking the time and going through many filters, not only will typos be caught, but your message will be clearer.

If you want a different set of eyes to look over your paperwork, I’ve created a Paperwork Review Session. It consists of two mini-coaching sessions. In the first call, I will share with you my first impressions about your photo and bio; conduct a 5-minute mock interview based on the paperwork you have provided to me; tips on how to improve your paperwork; and a second mini-call after you have made corrections from our first call. This will be the best $50 investment to strengthening your first impression and to building a solid foundation for your interview. To get the most from our time together, have the exact forms your pageant system uses filled out to the best you can. Then, click here to purchase your session. Once payment has been received, you will then receive an email to schedule your private telephone session with me.
